(1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Mar.,s. Major crime reached a record high in the United States in 1940. The average day produced 3G murders, 33 rapes and 17 felonious assaults. The FBI director (Mr J. Edgar Hoover) reported tonight that every day also brought 172 robberies, 981 burglaries, 630 motor car thefts and 2580 miscellaneous larcenies. Murder increased 33 per cent over 1945, robberies 15 per cent, rape 5 per cent, aggravated assault 13 per cent, burglaries 11 per cent. Major crimes totalled 1,685,203. This does not include certain serious offences such as embezzlement, fraud, arson, receiving stolen property and carrying concealed weapons. Only motor car thefts showed a decline.
