May Avert Coal Strike
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Though the threat of a coal strike has probably been averted. Bunnerong powerhouse exhausted its coal reserves late yesterday for the first time on record. The position is still serious and a : warning of possible interruptions to theelectricity supply has been issued. After deliberations lasting two days the central council of the Miners’ Federation decided not to recommend a general strike to mass meetings of New South Wales miners today. The Federal Government decision to call a meeting between miners, employers and Ministers on Monday had much to do with the council’s direction. In a joint statement by the general president and secretary, the council expressed belief that progress made in the negotiations fully justified the recommendation to continue work. Unless further gains were made before the annual general meeting, the annual council meeting would still consider the general strike proposal. Queensland and Victoria are also, holding aggregate meetings of miners which will mean a complete stoppage i of the coal industry in those states tomorrow.
