Gromyko Complains Of Useless Meetings
(Rec. 2 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 31. M. Gromyko described as useless today’s meeting of the Security Council, which Mr Makin (Australia) called on the last day of his chairmanship. The only item on the agenda was Britain’s complaint against Albania for the alleged mining of Corfu Channel, but this was unable to proceed because the Albanian representative has not yet arrived. - After reading a cable sent on behalf of the council to the Albanian Government asking when its representative was likely to arrive, Mr Makin said no reply had yet been received. THE ONLY REASON M. Gromyko then said: “I don’t understand why council members have to come here regularly every two days or so for these useless meetings. We know we are coming for nothing. “The only reason why the Albanian representative is not here is transport difficulty. I believe he left Albania on January 28. but I don’t know when he will arrive.’’
The council adjourned to a date to be fixed by the incoming chairman, the Belgian Fernand van la Ngehove.
