Atomic Energy As War Weapon Is Objective
(2.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 31. The Atomic Energy Commission, reporting to Congress, disclosed today that for “reasons of national security" it has subordinated the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and every effort is being made to perfect new and improved atomic weapons. The report confirmed a recent .hint that the United States is working on atomic bombs that will outmode those used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The commission declared that longrange security depends upon the swift development of improved atomic weapons.
The report did not give details, but it was expected that the commissioners would elaborate theron at the forthcoming closed meeting of the Joint Congressional Committee. .
The report assured Congress that secrets will be closely guarded.
