Fascists On Trial For 1924 Murder
(Rec. 10 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 22. The trial began in Rome today of four former Mussolini henchmen for the murder in 1924 of the Italian Socialist martyr, Giacomo Matteoti. They are: Amerigo Dumini, who was once thought to have been shot and killed by an Australian provost sergeant at Derna in 1941, and Amleto Povermo, who are charged with actually committing murder; Cesare Rossi, who is charged with complicity, and Francesco Giunta, charged with organising the Fascist secret police. Four others, whose whereabouts are unknown, will be tried in their absence.
The British United Press Rome correspondent says 200 eager spectators jammed the dingy courtroom to hear the evidience, showing what part Mussolini played in the removal of his sharpest critic.
