Drowned In Rehia Darn

(Special) DARGAVILLE, 'lhis Day. A schoolboy was drowned in a dam on a property at Rehia yesterday afternoon. He was: Rex Raymond Blong', aged 14, son of Mr ‘ and Mrs O. A. JBlong, of Whenuapai. Courageous efforts to save him were made by a companion, Gordon Stuart Finlayson. aged 14. The fatality occurred oil the property of Mr W. Finlayson, who was absent from his homo. In company with two of Mr Finlayson's sons, the boy went swimming in the dam. which is 2(1 yards in width and 7ft deep at the deepest point. The three had been bathing for about half an hour when Rex Blong suddenly sank about half-way across the dam. Gordon Finlayson immediately swam out and dived.

After several attempts he found Blong and brought him to the bank. He applied artificial respiration for 15 minutes without success. Meanwhile, his brother, Basil Frank Finlayson, mounted a horse which was tied near the dam. his intention being to inform his mother of the accident. The horse threw him and ho sulfercd a severe gasli on a knee. He walked to his home and informed his mother, who telephoned for a doctor.

The action of Gordon Finlayson in recovering the body was extremely plucky, said the coroner. Mr J. A. McLean, when the inquest was opened.
