Stage Set For Talks

'I 3 .A.> WELLINGTON. This Day. With the assembly in Wellington today of the full membership of the national council of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, the stage was set tor special and urgent consideration of the waterfront dispute. The conference will open in the Trades Hall, the primary purpose being discussion of the policy to be followed in Hie dispute.

The proceedings may properly be regarded as vital to the whole community, and the delegates themselves are well aware of the momentous nature' of the conference, which may have extensive effects politically and industrially.

The national president <Mr Barnes) sairj the length of the conference was indefinite, and lie did not know whether there would be any public session of the conference, or public statements from the conference.

He did not think this likely, but tiie conference would decide.

The delegates generally approved “Attack on the Workers," which sets out the union's attitude in the dispute, and there was a strong expectation that its publication would help toward an understanding by other unions and the public of the arguments presented by the union.

The present intention is to distribute 110,(100 co|iies. 50.000 being printed in Auckland and the remainder in Wellington.
