Dairy Workers

No immediate Strike Action

(Special) HAMILTON, This Day. The general meeting of the Auckland Dairy Factory Workers' Union last night decided not to take any immediate action on the strike issue.

The proposal was that a strike should be called as a protest against existing wages and conditions in the industry. The decision not to strike was carried by a narrow margin. Mr V. Booth presided over an attendance of 270 delegates representing between 700 and 800 members of the Auckland branch.

The report of the workers' assessors on the conciliation commission which sat in Wellington last week was received, among the speakers being Mr L. D. Robertson, secretary of the branch. ’ -

The reception of the report was not favourable, it was stated, strong dissatisfaction being expressed with the offer -made by the employers. Rates of wages offered were not approved by the meeting. The opinion that direct action should be taken in support of the union's claims was fairly unanimously approved, but a sharp division occurred when the question arose as to when direct : action should take place. Differences of opinion on the issue were discussed at length and a motion that an immediate strike should be called was narrowly defeated.
