China To Dominion In 14 Months
(F.A.) AUCKLAND. This Day. In the brave new world of supersonic speed it took Major S. E. Hetterley, of the British military mission in China, 14 months to reach New Zealand to spend two months' leave. He left China three days after V-J Day to join his wife in Dunedin cn furlough, and arrived in Auckland this morning in the motor-ship Nellore from Sydney.
Major Hetterley twice tried to cross the Himalayas into India in Halifax bombers but was forced to turn back because of engine trouble. Finally he reached Calcutta in a Dakota.
From there the Army, sent him to Bombay. He left Madras for Sydney via Singapore and Brisbane, and had to remain four months in Sydney before he could obtain a passage across the Tasman in the Nellore, which was delayed by the Sydney waterfront strike. „
