High Safety Of British Aircraft
Exception to Captain P. G. Taylor's reported suggestion from Sydney that Constellation aircraft would be immensely superior to flyingboals on the Tasman service, was taken today by Mr George - Puddicombc, technical representative of Short Brothers. In an interview, Mr Puddicombc said British civil aircraft had the highest safety standards in the world, and it was not fair for Captain Taylor to make comparisons with the latest American machines and. earlier British ones. Before being grounded recently as unsafe, the Constellations accounted for much of the civil aircraft fatality figures. he said, and pointed out that British aircraft on the Tasman service had operated for seven years without a fatality. The Short Sclent, which would soon be available, would have at least an equal payload to the Constellation on the Tasman crossing and passengers would know, too. that the hull of the boat would stand a fair chance in a landing on the sea, whereas a landplane could not survive.
