No Lowering Of British Stocks
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 6. Nothing more can.be done in lowering the British standards of living in order to assist tiermany, said Lord Pakenham in the House of Lords, replying for the Government to the debate on famine conditions in occupied zones of Germany. He said the food situation in the long run would be cured by the world recovery of food production. Everything at the moment depended on what could be obtained overseas.
The Eritish zone at present was on a hand-to-mouth basis.
Working stocks of grain on November 1 did not exceed 10 days’ supply. Urgent negotiations had been opened in Washington in an effort to solve the situation.
