Expected 2d. More For B'fat
Speaking at Ruakaka, where he farmed for many years, Mr A. J. Murdoch, M.P.. National candidate * for Marsden, last night received an attentive hearing from 15 electors. Mr Fattison presided.
The Dairy Board and the industry considered the 175/- per cwt which Britain agreed to pay for butter very satisfactory, Mr Murdoch said. Farmers’ representatives calculated that an extra 4d per pound would be available, of which a reasonable thing would have been 2d per lb extra for biuterfat this year, with the extra 2d going into the reserve account. In spite of all representations, however. Mr Nash had decided that all the farmer would get this season as his share of the 4d would be 1.281 d. MONEY FROM ROADS
The Government had turned down flatly a recommendation from the Parliamentary Select Committee that the hospital rate should be on the 1938 level.
In Whangarci County aproximntely £12.000 of £39,000 revenue was going in hospital rating, to the detriment of roads and bridges.
With the diversion too, of tyre and benzine taxes it was impossible for local bodies to provide farmers with decent roads, yet the Government was crying out continually for more production from the land. After answering several questions, the candidate received - a vote of thanks.
