No Festoon Lighting For Jubilee Celebrations

Festoon lighting for the Whangarei Borough Jubilee is prohibited, although some relaxation of restrictions in other directions will be permitted.

Information to this effect was received by the Borough Council's Jubilee celebrations committee last night from the Electricity Controller.

He regretted that it remained most essential to prohibit festoon lighting to safeguard the supply position until the new hydro stations were operating. The borough electrical engineer (Mr W. J. Dawson) was being advised that leasonably adequate lighting might be provided at Kensington Park and the Town Basin for organised celebrations. The Mayor (Mr W. Jones) reported that he had telegraphed the controller asking for a dispensation concerning window lighting restrictions between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. during celebrations week.

Cr H. W. James reported that a Jubilee wedding had been arranged to take place between the period the shops closed at 1 p.m. and the procession at 2.30 p.m. on the Wednesday. BROADCAST ARRANGEMENTS

The station manager at IYA advised that it would not be possible to broadcast the thanksgiving service on November 17, the reason being that the power line u%ed by the station between Whangarei ar.d Auckland was able to cope only with speech. The old identities’ reunion could be broadcast and he asked for information on the nature of the broadcast required. The emergency committee reported that it had asked that the reunion should be broadcast and that details should be deferred in the meantime.

As only a small charge for admission to the Jubilee flower show was being made and because competitors from as far south as Christchurch and Shannon would be participating, the emergency committee advised that it had agreed to supplement the prizemoney up to £lO/10/- if necessary. The High Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia (Mr J. G. Barclay) wrote thanking the council for its invitation to be present at the Jubilee celebrations. He and his wife were sorry it would not be possible for them to attend.
