Navy To Set Up Waitangi Flagstaff

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Because of the navy’s association with the historic event of the _ signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the erection of a neV flagstaff on the site where the signing took place will be undertaken by the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Announcing this the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) said it was considered appropriate that the truck of the ensign staff of HMNZS Philomel, which had been removed before her disposal, would be used together with other fittings from the Devonport naval base in the rigging of the new flagstaff. Naval ceremonies or visits would be carried out at Waitangi from time to time and maintenance of the flag would be the responsibility of the Royal New Zealand Navy. -
