YESTERDAY’S PLAY The Whangarei professional, Jim Galloway, partnered by W. Allbon, of Auckland, finished thii’d in the New Zealand professional foursomes championship at Hokowhitu yesterday.

The winners were J. D. Mclntosh and A. J. Shaw with a total for the two rounds of 149.

A. E. Guy and J. Weir were next with 150 and Galloway and Allbon took 151.

The winning amateur*, were N. H. Amon and D. G. Graham with 150, followed by J. L. Black and R. HayMcKenzie, 151. The weather yesterday was the best so far during the tournament and the form generally showed improvement. D. L. Woon and W. G. Horne stepped on to the last tee requirng only a five for victory. , Horne drope well but Woon hooked his iron into a bunker. The ball finished close to a bank and after he had executed his recovery shot, the ball hit the bank and struck Horne’s club, incurring a penalty of two strokes. Woon’s next shot was on the green but the pair had taken eight for the hole. There has been much criticism of the bunkers at the Hokowhitu course.

On many occasions during the tournament, balls have finished close to steep banks and the players have had to play away from the pin as it was impossible to play in the direction of. the hole., At the same time, the links provide a thorough test for class golfers.
