Explosion On Tanker

(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) NEW YORK. Sept. 25 Five are dead, one missing and one seriously injured from a fire and explosion which accompanied it on the tanker Bennington. When she berthed at Southport, North Carolina, today, the captain, Mr K. H. Eitzen, said a terrific blast occurred late on the night of Tuesday. Flames quickly enveloped the forward part of the ship, which was travelling empty. The crew, using hoses, brought the flames under control within two hours. Members of the crew said they believed a spark from a light-switch ignited gasoline femes and caused the explosion. The Bennington has a hole in her bow about 15ft wide.
