Oppose Conscription In Peacetime
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON. June 25.
Seventy Labour commoners signed a motion opposing peacetime conscription for the armed forces. ‘‘While the House welcomes the Government’s decision gradually to reduce the period of compulsory service in the fighting forces, it is of the opinion that military conscription in peacetime is alien to the traditions of this country, and should come to an end as soon as practicable." the motion states. Labour back-benchers for some time have been unsuccessfully putting pressure on the Government to allow a debate on this issue.
