Social Democrats Oppose Fusion
LONDON, April 1 With about 1500 of the 24,000 votes uncounted, the Berlin Social Democrats have voted 85 per cent against fusion with the Communists. Lastminute intervention from the Russians stopped the voting in the Soviet sector.
On the second issue, whether the parties should eventually be allied, 60 per cent voted in favour. In spite of a request from the central committee of the party for an embargo on the plebiscite, 70' per cent of the members took part. Reuter’s correspondent says the results are thus considered a blow to the prestige of the central committee, whose headquarters are in the Russian zone.
