Discuss Stability Of Coal Industry

(Rec. 1.0.) CANBERRA, This Day. No conclusive decisions were announced following two conferences between Mr Chifley and mine union leaders. Discussions centred about the stability of the coal industry and were also attended by the New South Wales Premier (Mr McKell) and the State Minister of Mines (Mr Baddeley). The immediate issue is the tension which has followed the refusal of the Coal Commissioner to allow recent wage increases granted by the Central Coal Authority on the grounds that they contravene wartime wage-pegging regulations. The decisions of the coal authority will be examined to see if they affect the whole structure of the regulations or merely cover the position created by the change of working conditions.

In discussion on the future of the coal industry, the miners’ leaders pressed strongly for nationalisation of mines.
