Madrid Crowds Acclaim Franco
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) MADRID, April 1. Surrounded by a bodyguard of Moorish horsemen. Franco took the salute at a military parade marking | the anniversary of the Civil War victory. The crowd chanted: “Franco! Franco! Franco!” Many gave the Falangist salute as 18,000 troops marched past. After the military parade a crowd estimated at more than 10,000, including students, officers and priests, demonstrated in front of the Royal Palace. Franco appeared on the balcony and received ovations. In a speech Franco declared that the unity of Spaniards would assure that Spain remained great and free. The demonstration is interpreted in Madrid as being a response to France’s recent closing of the frontier. 50,000 GUERILLAS According to Warsaw radio, 50,000 armed guerillas are fully prepared for action in Spain. This, says the radio, was revealed by the President of the Government in exile (Dr Giral), in an interview with the Polish News Agency. He added that an underground civil administration already existed in Spain, ready to take over the Government’s business if Franco was overthrown.
