Submarines in Sf, Lawrence

(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) OTTAWA. April • German submarines operated 259 miles up the St. Lawrence River near the mouth of the Saquenay, torpedoing 26 ships and sinking 22 with vital war cargoes.

All but three of the attacks occurred during the concentrated assault in that area in 1942, after which intensive defence preparations, which saw the Gaspe Peninsula bristling with naval, ground and aerial defence and studded with radar detection devices, reached such strength at there wero few attacks.
