Whales Suffering From Starvation
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.)
LONDON. Mar. 31
Starvation among whales, which are yielding far less oil than normally, is puzzling scientists, says the Capetown correspondent of the Daily Mail. Low yields, combined with poor catches, will add to food difficulties in Europe. The factory ship, Sir Janies Clark Ross, damaged in Antarctic gales, reached Capetown with 119,000 barrels of oil instead of the 140,000 expected.
Experts on the ship report that whales are thinner than at any time in living memory. Only a resumption of oceanographic research, prevented by the war, will throw light on the mystery. It will show what has happened to the plankton on which whales feed.
