Many Hotels Just 'Booze Dens'
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Outspoken comment on the general condition of hotels in New Zealand was made by the Minister of Works (Mr Semple) when he discussed with the town planning committee of the Christchurch City Council this morning the advisability of having first class hotel accommodation near the proposed new railway station. “Many hotels in this country are just booze dens and should be wiped out.” Mr Semple said. “I do not know what the decision of the licensing commission will be, but real reform is needed for there are many hotels in which it is impossible to get a decent bed. ‘ Half of them are such pokey little places that you can nearly put your hand down the chimney and unlock the door. “There is not a decent modern hotel in the city of Auckland.”
