New Task For Veteran Claymore

The old steamer Claymore, which, because of increasing age. was taken ofi' the Northern Steamship Company’s Whangarei-Auckland passenger and cargo run since before the war and relegated to "Rotten Row." it- still in (lie land of living ships. The Claymore (245 tons) was built by W. C. Denny and Company, of Glasgow, in the 90's of last century, and was brought to New Zealand under her own steam.
After serving for many years on the Whangarei run the ship was pensioned nil. When a salvage ship was required for the raising of the gold from fhe sunken Niagara, the Claymore was recommissioned.
Later the Claymore was used as the gate ship for the boom defences which stretched across Ihe entrance to the Auckland Harbour.
Now. the Claymore, which is owned by the Navy, is to be used foi training cadets of the Auckland Division of the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps.
Commander C. H. T. Palmer, commanding officer of the division, stated yesterday that the ship would be available to the cadets as soon as arrangements had been made for a suitable mooring place. It would then be used to give members of the corps week-end training under sea conditions.
