Northlanders Among Men To Receive Service Awards

Forty-nine officers and men of the Navy, Army and Air Force, including several Northlanders, received awards for gallant or distinguished service at an investiture at the Town Hall last night.

The awards were presented by the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall). His Excellency was accompanied by Lady Newall, Major H. A. Jaffray, military secretary, Commodore W. K. D. Dowding, D.S.C., R.N., Brigadier A. E. Conway, 0.8. E., N.Z.S.C., Group Captain C. C. Hunter, R.N.Z.A.F., and Lieutenant-Colonel F. J. Gwilliam, E. all honorary aides-de-camp. The ceremony lasted for an hour and three-quarters. Those present included next-of-kin of recipients and representatives of the Services and various civic bodies and organisations. As the name of each recipient was called, the citation was read, after which he marched to the centre of the hall and then to the stage. Brigadier Conway took the insignia from a table and placed it on a scarlet cushion carried by Commodore Dowding. The award was then presented by the Governor-General, both he and Lady Newall shaking hands with the recipients. Members of all three Services, as well as a number of representatives of the Maori race, were included in the list of awards. A few still showed traces of their wounds, but all were able to march to. the official dais.
