Seek Recognition Of Name Of Northland
Strong representations had been made by the WhangareL Chamber of Commerce for the name Northland to be used in weather broadcasts, and the question was being pursued, it was reported to the monthly meeting of the chamber committee this week. The president (Mr J. F. Johnson) presided, and Mr J. R. Mcllraith, recently appointed secretary, was welcomed. Representations had been made to have the north-bound express reinstated on Saturdays, it was reported, but the Railway Department had intimated that this was impossible owing to the present shortage of coal. The ’bus service conducted by the Railway Road Services would improve transport facilities. Remits to Conference. The president and Mr W. L. McKinnon were appointed to represent the chamber at the Associated Chambers of Commerce conference in Wellington on October 30 and 31 and November 1. when remits in connection with air services for Northland and the Omapere hydro-electric development scheme would be submitted by the chamber. Preceding this conference, a meeting of Northland chambers was being organised by the Whangarei chamber, to be held at Kaikohe on October 23, to obtain full information and details of Northland views.
The chamber had associated itself with other organisations in connec- | tion with the acquisition of the WhaI ngarei Falls and the purchase subject to the consent of the Land Sales Committee. Rehabilitation Assistance. The executive' had set up a committee to deal with rehabilitation and to date seven returned servicemen had been installed in satisfactory quarters of business on their own account. In connection with the apprentice subsidy scheme of the Government, the chamber had communicated with the Minister for Rehabilitation and Mr A. J. Murdoch, M.P. for Marsden, asking for inclusion of distributing and retail trades. The chamber was making representations to the Whangarei Borough Council concerning the state of footpaths in Vine, James, Rathbone and John Streets, and asking for improvement. while the council had been requested successfully to establish a suitable protective barrier at the corner of Walton and Quay Streets.
The Russell Town Board was organising a Bay of Islands tourist bureau, with headquarters at Russell, and the chamber was compiling local information and assisting in every possible way. A sub-committee had instituted a competition for pupils at the Whangarei High School, mainly on handwriting and phraseology, prizes amounting to £3 3s to be awarded by the chamber.
