Effect Of Housing Improvement Bill
"Actually the draft Bill carries into effect the provisions generally of the new Auckland Council by-laws. It is, of course, another step in the control of municipal affairs by regulation. If administered under strict bureaucratic control and in its entirety the Bill could be most irksome, but if its operation remained chiefly in the hands of the municipal bodies it would doubtless work for the amelioration of housing conditions. “In considering the Bill, however, the regulations intended to be made thereunder are of the utmost concern and the minimum requirements should be settled and included in the Bill before it is passed.” These comments were made bv the borough solicitor (Mr. D. J. Thomson) in reporting to the health committee of the Whangarei Borough Council on the Housing Improvement Bill. The report, which dealt in detaj) with the various clauses, came before the council last night, with a recommendation from the committee that it should be adopted and copies for warded to the Minister for Works, the Municipal Association and Mr. A. J. Murdoch, M.P. for Marsden, the council giving its approval.
