No Increase In School Parents’ Representation
No immediate prospect of parents being given more representation on the Whangarei High School Board is offered by the Minister for Education (Hon. H. G. R. Mason). At its last meeting, the board decided to make representations to the Minister to have the constitution of the board altered to permit parents to have mere representation. Members considered that insufficient representation existed for parents and that the Minister should be urged to sanction alteration of the constitution. Replying to the request, the Minister advised the board at its meeting last night that secondary schools as a general rule did not have mote than two representatives of parents on their boards of governors and, therefore, the request brought the general question of representation of members on boards into consideration.
He regretted that it was not possible at the present time to give any definite promise that the request could be met, as a review of local control of schools would take considerable time.
