Equipment Not Destroyed
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The Minister for Defence (Hon. F. Jones) replying to an urgent question by Mr. A. S. Richards (Government —Roskill) in th£ House of Representatives yesterday, said that his attention had been drawn to a report of a Court case in Hamilton where a member of the Air Force was charged with the theft of a radio set from the Royal New Zealand Air Force and stated to the Court that thousands of pounds’ worth of radio equipment had been destroyed at the Air Force signals repair unit at headquarters, Hamilton.
Mr. Jones said he had been advised that the airman in question stole a radio set which had been sent in for repair and had been repaired. It was* recovered from him before action was taken, but the matter had been reported to the police and the airman was summoned and accused of stealing the set. “His story that he had been told with ten other airmen to break up certain equipment and that this radio set was going to be broken up was quite untrue,” continued the Minister. “I am advised that since the ease was heard he has apologised to one officer on his station for using the excuse that he made. No, equipment had been destroyed at Hamilton which would have been of any value to the public or could have been disposed of through the War Assets Realisation Board.” .
