North Butterfat Last Season 20,300 Tons
The production goal which dairy farmers of the Dominion set themselves at the outset of last season—to increase butterfat by 10 per cent., equal to 15,000 tons—was exceeded by some 3000 tons. Manufactured into butter and cheese, the extra 18,000 tons of fat produced would represent a much higher tonnage of produce available to Britain.
Butterfat production for the season ended July 31 was 159,000 tons, against 141,000 tons in the previous season, representing an increase of just on 13 per cent. Well over, half of the Dominion’s butterfat was produced in the South Auckland area, which includes the Waikato. Output there was 66,300 tons, compared with 57,100 tons in the previous season, an increase of 16 percent. Taranaki was the next largest producer with 26,400 tons of fat, against 23,300 tons in the earlier season, an increase of 14 per cent.
Northland showed an increase of only 41 per cent., the output of fat from there being 20,300 tons, compared with 19,400 tons. The Bay of Plenty produced 9350 tons, compared with 8610 tons, an increase of 11 per cent. The greatest increase in fat production was achieved in the Wellington district. Output there was 18 per cent, higher at 16,500 tons, against 14,000 tons in the previous season.
