Hutton Scores 188 Against N.Z. Team
In a cricket match against New Zealand Services at Scarborough, Leveson Gower's XI., thanks to a prolific first wicket stand of 216 between the test record holder, Hutton and Washbrook, totalled 472. At the end of the first day’s play they had scored 121 together. Hutton and Washbrook, continuing their opening stand, laced Pritchard, who showed pace from a hard turf, and Badeoek, who kept a good length and mixed his spin. The batsmen drove and pulled nicely, and spectators many times applauded smart fielding bv Donnelly and Badeoek ior stopping cuts and cutting off boundaries. Three consecutive maidens emphasised the keenness of the struggle. Hutton, with a four from Gailaugher, completed his 100 in 175 minutes. Roberts, a medium-pace bowler, beat Washbrook, playing forward, after the stand had lasted 2>/ 2 hours. Washbrook was particularly strong on the leg side. He hit nine fours. 1 For 289 At Lunch
At: lunch the score was 1 for 289 <Hutton 171, Wyatt 2G). Wyatt, hitting Morgan twice to the ropes in one over, nut ihe home side ahead with nine wickets in hand. Hutton, when Pritchard came on with a new ball, took 15 from one over. The second wicket added 8G in 55 minutes. Hutton batted 3 hours 44 minutes and hit 24 fours. The New Zealanders’ keen fielding made the cricket high class. Pritchard found the pitch rather lifeless, but Badeoek, with length, change and pace and skill, earned the reward of prolonged work.
