Visit To Western Samoa

APIA, This Day.

The Governor-General of New Zealand (Sir Cyril Newall) arrived on Monday on'a farewell visit to Western Samoa, and departed early on Wednesday. On Tuesday morning Their Excellencies attended an entertainment by the schoolchildren at Malifa School, In the afternoon, the Samoan people assembled at Mulinuu in large numbers for a farewell ceremony. A speech of Welcome was made by the Hon. Tualaulelei, M.L.C.. expressing thanks for the splendid work of the Governor-General for the benefit of Samoa. The speech was followed by the presentation of the King’s kava in honour of a distinguished visitor. After messages from various districts and a speech by an orator, Mataafa, the Governor-General spoke of the sacrifices made by Great Britain and New Zealand to help to win the war. He told his audience how anxious New Zealand was to assist the Samoan people to attain their aim of selfgovernment, which could only be arrived at by unity among themselves, and more education to fit them for the work.

A reception and dance for Europeans was held at the Tivoli Theatre in the evening. It was very well attended. Lady Newall, the Administrator and Mrs A. C. Turnbull accompanied the Governor-General to all' functions.
