Community Building For Paihia Is Institute Move
At the monthly meeting of the Paihia branch of the Women’s Institute. Mr Vernon Reed was invited to explain his proposals for the erection of a Community Building for Paihia. Mr Reed stressed the important part the Servicemen’s Hut had played in the social life of the district. The inevitable removal of the hut building in the near ! future made it imperative that steps should be taken immediately to erect, a suitable building to give the social amenities enjoyed by the use of the hut. The building should be in stone or other permanent material of good architectural design, and of a size to hold a meeting of 30 persons. It should be a comfortable room, said Mr Reed, with a large fireplace and facilities for providing refreshments at a social gathering. The necessary funds could be obtained by concerts and other entertainments and by the issue of debentures, which would be repayable without interest. The management should be in a committee with equal representation from the Women’s Institute, Library Committee, Red Cross Committee and debentureholders, and any other bodies interested, and the building should be available to such organisations. On the motion of Mrs G. Johnston, the scheme was adopted, and the Institute undertook to start the campaign for funds. It was further agreed that the building should be in the form of a War Memorial. Thi' site for (lie building was left to an executive to be appointed at a public meeting to be convened shortly by the institute. ‘
