Sydney Greets Force From Jap. Waters
(Rec. 1.20 p.rn.) SYDNEY, This Day. Crowds lined Sydney foreshores early today to watch the arrival of units of the British Fleet which recently took part in the final assault on Japan. It was Sydney’s first chance since the war of giving a fitting welcome to a naval task force fresh from battle honours. Five British warships arrived —the two aircraft-carriers Implacable and Formidable, escorted by the destroyers Undine, Urchin and Grenville, with Rear-Admiral Vian in command. Shipping in the harbour greeted the warships with sirens. Avengers and Corsairs of the returning units landed at a New South Wales naval air station yesterday. Another British carrier, the Victorious, with the destroyer Urama, is due in Sydney, this afternoon. All ships have taken part in two big Pacific strikes—the first against Sakashima- in May and the second against Japan itself, They have been at sea three months. • .
