Possible Tax Amendments

(Special) WELLINGTON, This Day

Possible taxation amendments during this financial year were mentioned by the Minister lor Supply (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) when speaking in the debate on the Financial Statement in the House of Representatives last night. He gave an assurance on behalf of the Government and of the Minister for Finance (Hon. W. Nash; that as expenditure fell so would taxation. “We will first have to see where we tire in regard to amounts which will come to charge during this financial year,” said the Minister. "The money has to be found. It is not until the way can be seen clearly as to the amount which is to conn* to charge ihis year that we will be able to sav whether it is possible to bring about a reduction of taxation this year. Special provision will he .made in the amending taxation laws this year for a reduction in taxation following any reduction in expenditure."

Tiie Minister added that the House could be absolutely assured that luxation would not be reduced to the point where it would endanger social security or the proper provision for servicemen in conformity to the Government's pledges to them. It was the more unfortunate sections oj the community and the soldiers who had served (he country so well who were entitled to first consideration and these priority obligations would be kept in view by the Government in making provision for any taxation reduction.
