CHINESE BANQUET

V- O ' which appeared in the “Advocate - ’ on Monday last. This report failed

to grasp the real spirit of the occasion, but made instead something of a burlesque of what was really a very fine gesture on the part of our Chinese friends. Most, if not all. of our local Chinese have close relatives who have been subject, to all the ravages and privations of war during their long years of struggle with Japan. With many of these they have lost complete touch. In their own way they wished to give some expression to their gratitude and relief now that hostilities have ceased, and they did it by extending to some of their European friends in the very best manner of which they are capable. and it was a very fine best. To everyone privileged to be present it was a memorable occasion.

The reference to their eating of cats was very much out of place. Anyone invited to partake of food prepared by the Chinese need have no fears. Their standard of cleanliness is very high, only the best is good enough, and their skill as cooks is world renowned.—THOS. A. WALDF.R. I Our correspondent will be interested to hear that local Chinese residents, when contacted yesterday, expressed appreciation of the report, which they clearly accepted in the spirit in which it was written. —Ed. “N.A."J
