Whangarei Does Well At Hockey Against Auckland Elevens

Saturday proved a gala day for hockey in Whangarei when four club teams from Auckland tried conclusions with local elevens. On the day Whangarei was dominant High School completely outclassing Mt. Eden juniors, winning by 6 goals to 1; United - Old Boys defeated Mt. Eden seniors, 4—l; Whangarei won from Navy, 3—2; while St. Luke’s produced superb combination in defeating Kara-Kai-Pai, 4—2. All games were of a high standard and produced

many exciting incidents. After the matches the visitors were entertained at a smoke concert and later at a dance. ST. LUKE’S ON TOP From the offset St. Luke’s attacked

and had the defence on its mettle, but. Kara-Rai-Pai (a combined local team) by hard-hitting was able to keep its goal intact. However, the pressure told and the St. Luke’s forwards, by clever stickwork, camped in its opponent’s circle where R, Grace scored. The local team took a while, in settling down and only indivfduai efforts were seen until, in a strong' attack, P, Jenkins equalised.—St. Luke’s 1, Whangarei 1. Undaunted the Auckland team as one man swept to the attack and again had' its opponents in difficulties from which R. Grace scored again. With St. Luke’s in the ascendant half-time! sounded with the score: St. Luke’s 2, Whangarei i. Upon resumption the local team made a determined effort, but the St. Luke’s defence was solid. The visiting backs, by sound ball control, soon had their forwards on attack and G. Kerr further increased the lead. Shortly after R. Grace scored his third goal when he flicked the ball into the side of the net.—St. Luke’s 4, Whangarei 1.

After a period of midfield exchanges, Whangarei went on the attack, and with masterful ball control, C. Bint netted a stinger. With the local team still on the attack the final whistle found the score—St. Luke’s 4, Whangarei 2.

A feature of the game was the superb kicking of the visitors’ goalie. His kicks at times were reminiscent of a football match. Messrs J. W. Foster and D. Thomson umpired, NAVY DOWNED

From the start, Navy attacked and sorely tried the Whangarei defence, opening its account in the first five minutes when H. Hart netted. Navy had the better of the exchanges in the first spell until, only a few minutes before half-time, the local team with a determined effort carried play to the opposing circle, where CFoster scored.

Whangarei livened in the second spell and held a decided advantage which was put to good account when L. Price scored.—Whangarei 2, Navy 1.

Navy now took a hand and made several attacks which were repulsed until H. Hart scored his second goal—Whangarei 2, Navy 2. Even play was now witnessed and it was anybody’s game. From a good passing attack Fyfe put in a strong run to score a nice goal. With Navy looking for an equaliser the final whistle sounded with the score— Whangarei 3, Navy 2. Messrs J. R. Johnson and H. Patterson umpired. AN EASY VICTORY

By four goals to one. United-Old Boys proved to have too strong a combination for Mt. Eden seniors, who, however, fought doggedly all the way. For United, R. Mullins (2). B. Reed and D. Hannani scored, while W. Wright netted for Mt. Eden. Messrs. F. Primmer and B. R Woolford umpired HIGH SCHOOL SUPERIOR Producing its usual solid combination, High School completely dominated play in its game with Mt. Eden juniors, to run out winners by six goals to one. The latter played well, but were out-manoeuvred, For School, W Primmer (5) and K. Mullins scored, while R. Dowden netted for Mt. Eden. Messrs. H. W Young and S. Oldcorn umpired. WOMEN’S GAMES

In a regrading match, Old Girls B and Hikurangi fought a scoreless draw. In another regrading match. Y.W.C.A. and Portland, the former emerged victors by four goals to three. Y.W.C.A. soon took the lead, and when holding a 4—l advantage seemed lo ease up and Portland came like a train to just miss equalising. Per Y.W.C.A , E. Pitman (3) and L. Bank’s scored, while for Portland, M. Primrose (2) and D. Shaw netted. Messrs. B. E, Wcolford and D. Thomson umpired.
