No Resent Matinee Owing to a typographical error, it was inadvertently shown yesterday that a matinee was to be held at the Regent Theatre, at 2 p.m. today. * * * Frosts Return A fairly heavy frost was felt throughout the Middle North last night. The two previous nights, while cold and foggy, were misty enough to hold off the frost. In Whangarei this morning a light frost occurred, the second in succession. * * * * Drama Council After being in recess for three years on account of difficult wartime conditions, the Auckland Drama Council has decided to resume activities. This decision was reached at a meeting of the council held this week. The Northland Federation of Women’s Institutes is affiliated with the council. * * * * Arbor Day According to a notice appearing in last night’s Gazette, Wednesday, August 1, is to be observed as Arbor Day throughout the Dominion. In view of the national importance of tree-planting local bodies are requested to organise suitable celebrations on that day.

Sheep Destroyed By Dogs Judgment for £36/10/-, being the value" of sheep alleged to have been destroyed by defendants’ dogs, was awarded R. M. Marchant by Mr W. C. Harley, S.M.. against W. Broughton and J. Erihe in the Mangonui Court on Wednesday. Mr R. H. Kelly presented the claim, which was not defended.

Liquor Near Dance Hall Being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall cost J. Dangen £2 with costs *lO/- when he was found guilty of this offence by Mr W. C. Harley in the Mangonui Court on Wednesday. For aiding and abetting in the supply of liquor to a native, namely himself, J. Broughton was also fined £2 with 15/- costs. The cases were presented by Constable R. Turvey. * * * * Coal For Gasworks Coal supplies at the Whangarei gasworks have been augmented by the arrival yesterday of the auxiliary scow, Waikonini, carrying a further substantial quantity of gas coal from Greymouth. This is the third shipment to be obtained by the gasworks within the last four weeks. The manager (Mr J. W. Atkinson) stated that with the quantity of coal received yesterday, stocks at the works were up to normal.

To Start on State Houses The present group of 12 trainees at the Kaikohe rehabilitation Maori carpentry training school will complete the workshop course next Tuesday, and another group will then take their places shortly afterwards. Ihe first dozen men will then start work on the necessary preliminary part of State house construction in ICaikohe. It is expected that two houses will he completed by them within four months and that four more will be in process of erection by the end of the year.

Rehabilitation The monthly meeting of the Whangarei Business and Professional Women’s Club took place in the Y.W.C.A. lounge on Tuesday, when a most interesting and constructive talk was given by Mrs. C. M. Begg, national president of the Y.W.C.A., of New Zealand, on rehabilitation of returned men and women, and matters affecting the employment of women generally. Mrs. Begg r.poke of the investigations being carried out by rehabilitation committees, business and professional women’s clubs, and various organisations .in other centres, with reference to finding fresh avenues of employment for returned servicemen and women. “We must not think in terms of yesterday and old ways of doing things, but forge ahead with new ideas and methods,” said Mrs. Begg.
