Bay of Islands Deep Sea Fishing At Best

(Special) RUSSELL, This Day. The Bay of Islands deep-sea fishing season is now at its best and many good catches have been made since the beginning of the month. A party of vice-presidents of the Bay of Islands Swordfish and Make Shark Club, comprising Messrs. G., C. and Bruce Ashley, B; E. Pope and J. Beatty, all of Auckland, fishing from the Rosemary, were all successful. Mr. Pope landed a striped marlin of 2901b5.; Mr. J. Beatty a 300-pounder; Mr. G. Ashley a 240-pounder; Mr. C. Ashley, of 202 lbs.; and Mr. Bruce Ashley a striped marlin of 2601b5. A similar party of vice-presidents who can also claim to be consistent supporters of the club and sport, hailing from the South Island, were also very successful. Mr. R. T. Simpson created a record for this season, fighting and landing singlehanded three fish in one day (striped marlin weighing 3101b5., 2501b5., and 228 lbs.). In addition a 2151 b. striped marlin and a black marlin of 2301b5. fell to his skill. , ' Another Dunedin man, Mr. G. Stone, caught a 2451 b. striped marlin, whilst Mr. Bill Paterson, of Christchurch, caught a 7181 b. black marlin—a great; fish. Mr. J. McGregor, of Devonport, hooked rnakos weighing lOOlbs. tfnd 1631b5., and a 2821 b. striped marlin. Mr. T. S. Stewart, of Morrinsville, landed two rnakos of 2701b5. and 3561b5, respectively. Mr. H. Beatham, of Masterton, caught two rnakos of 1281bs. and 1981b5., fishing from Alma G. 11. Mr. F. Tatham got a striped marlin of 2421b5. and Mr. K. R. Sutherland a black marlin of 4181bs. The sensation of the week was when 11 fish were brought in cn one day. A summary for February’s fishing is as follows:—Black marlin 8 (7701bs..best fish): striped marlin, 30 (3101bs. best fish); mako shark, 13 (4141b5. best fish; hammerhead shark. 2. Launch scores: Alma G. 11. 16: Lady Helen, 12; Alma G. 10; Ozone, 7; Rosemary, 4; Maomao. 4.
