Will Protect Greeks Against Coup d’Etat

(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) ATHENS, Dec. 1. The British General Officer Commanding in Greece (General Scobie), broadcasting to the Greeks, declared: “I stand firmly behind the present constitutional Government until the Greek State can be established with a legal armccl force behind it. and free election can be held. I will protect you and your Government against any attempt at a coup d’etat or act of violence which is unconstitutional. I am convinced that in many parts of Greece there is no freedom of speech, no freedom of the Press, and that terrorism and violence still exist.

A fierce battle between police and a group of Greeks formerly employed by the Gestapo broke out last night in Concox'de Square, in the centre of Athens, reports the Athens correspondent of the British United Press. Eight men, one of whom was notorious as a torturer for the German police, were attempting to escape from Athens by car when the police stooped them. The men opened fire with revolvers and machine-guns and threw hand-grenades. One police- officer was killed and four men were arrested.
