Otamatea jersey Bulls Bring Record Prices
(Special) PAPAROA, This Day. All club records were broken at the 12th annual sale of the Otamatea Jersey Club held at Paparoa yesterday. Of the 58 entries catalogued, 48 were sold at an average of 39gns. compared with 25gns last year. The best previous sale conducted by the club was in 1910 when the average was 33gns. Top price for the sale was gained by Mr M. Maras, of Marohemo, when he sold the yearling Middle-more Squireen, for 150gns to Mr K. Meier, of Ruawai. This is the highest price ever attained in the history of the club and gives Mr Maras the distinction of having set new standards for the Whangarei and Otamatea Jersey Clubs m the one season. Bidding started at lOOgns and continued briskly until Mr Meier secured his purchase at 150gns. There was a tie for second place between Mr Maras and Mr F. E. Cullen. Mr Cullen was paid lOOgns by Mr H. J. Woodward, of Ruawai, for the yearling, Mount View Bright Gold. For the yearling. Middlemore Sunglow, Mr Maras realised lOOgns, the purchaser being Mr J. Maich, of Te Kopuru. Of the 48 animals sold, 33 yearlings averaged 39 l-3g'ns and 13 two-year-olds averaged 33|gns, while two older bulls realised 921gns and 35gns each. Although rain threatened during the day the weather remained cold but fine until towards the end of the sale when a steady downpour set in and had an adverse effect on the final realisations. A large bench of buyers were quick to appreciate quality and bidding was always brisk for any first-class animal. The auctioneers had to work hard, however, with any bull that did not have a good backing. In this connection several members of the club are discussing the possibility of the introduction of a standard below which no bull will be allowed to be sold.
