Whangarei High School Boys’ Speech Contest

The annual boys’. speech contest of the Whangarei High School , was held yesterday in the Boys’ Hall. Tire Bishop of Auckland (the Rt. Rev. W. J. Simkin) was present, and addressed the school after the contest. The headmaster (Mr A. R. Ryder) was chairman and the judge was the Rev. A. E. Prebble. The speeches were of a very high standard, and the judge admitted to great difficulty in arriving at his decisions, especially in the senior division. When announcing these, he addressed a few words of advice and praise to the competitors. Awards’ were: Senior: W. G. Wilson (“Field-Mar-shal Smuts”), 1; C. M. Arneil (“Mallory and Irvine”), 2.

Intermediate: D. C. Marshall (“Smeeton's Lighthouse”), 1; L, A. Gribble (“Kingsford Smith”), 2. Junior: A. M. Simons (“The Flamethrower”), 1; J. Hall (“Penicillin”), 2.
