New Raid On Japan

(Rec. 11 a.in.) WASHINGTON, August 20. The War Department announced that super-Fortresses raided an industrial ar>a in the vicinity ol‘ Yawato, in Kyushu.. An Imperial Japanese communique states‘•Approximately 60 planes of the American Air Force in China divided into 10 formalions, raided Kyushu and ihe western sector of Chogoku. at about one hour from 5 p.m. today. Japanese planes immediately intercepted the enemy, shooting down over a dozen planes, of which three were downed by gallant bodily clashes of our planes. Some American crews who baled out were captured. Some damage was inflicted to our ground installations.” The radio added that 10 small enemy planes raided Rota Island, in the South Marianas, on August 18; 12 large planes raided Rota on August 19; and 18 planes raided Wotje Island in the Marshalls, on August 19.
