Does Anyone Know Who Owns This?
(Official N.Z.E.F. War Correspondent) NISSAN. April 28. Surely the oddest trophy yet picked up by a New Zealander in this war was collected by Pte. A. E. Travers, of the Third Division. N.Z.E.F., after the Japanese occupying one island had been wiped out. Included in the material collected afterwards was a Japanese radio set and attached to this was a chain on which were two or three keys and a silver medal in the shape of a Maltese Cross. On the obverse side of the medal was inscribed “five miles ordinary championship. C. R Wilson. 1892.“ and on the reverse side surrounded by a laurel wreath “Now Zealand cycling alliance." The term “ordinary championship" refers, of course, to the type oi cycle with one very small and one very large wheel which is generally known as a “pennyfarthing." Cycling in the nineties was a very popular sport in New Zealand. Pte. Travers is anxious to earn more about the history of the medal and if the owner for it can be found, he is prepared to hand it over.
