Ladies’ Gardening Club Hold Horticultural Show
Inclement weather on Monday last did not prevent the attendance of a good number of members at the fortnightly meeting of the L.G.C., held at the Presbyterian Hall.
The president (Mrs. Shannan) occupied the chair and before the business of the meeting commenced asked those present to observe a few moments’ silence as a mark of respect for Mrs. J. Webber, a member, who recently died. The afternoon programme took the form of a chrysanthemum show, and a talk by the Rev. Geo. Brown, who entertained members with an account of an interesting trip he made to the southwestern glaciers. The speaker vividly described the beauty and' grandeur of the scenery of the west coast of the South Island, which is not excelled in any other land. He spoke specially of the native bush, which, untouched by man, covered the hillsides, with its varied trees and ferns. He contrasted it with the English countryside in soring and autumn, the gorgeous colouring of the trees being missed by overseas visitors, who perhaps find the evergreen native foliage a little monotonous to unaccustomed eyes. Mr. Brown’s talk was listened to with great interest, and a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded him at its close.
Many beautiful exhibits were staged by members for the chrysanthemum show, though it was a little early for seme varieties.
Among the members taking part were Mesdames Sharman, Logan, N. Brown, Haden, Simons and Steedman.
Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mrs. F. Haigh and Mrs. Weaver.
