Hope To Eliminate Big Waste In Coalmines
(Special) SYDNEY, This Day. Millions of tons of high-grade coal will .be saved for Australia if experiments which have begun at Abmlare Colliery. Newcastle, prove that hydraulic stowage can be applied in high seam mines. Hydraulic stowage means the packing or tilling up ol' the space previously occupied by coal to permit, the removal of pillars of coal which, under the present system of mining, must be left to support the roofs of mines. I.'mler great water pressure, ash, sand or crushed soil is forced into the mine and tightly packed to bear the pressure of the roof iu order to prevent movement which not. only causes surface .subsidences, but also makes the recovery of rich coal close to areas already worked extremely danger-
Far-seeing coal authorities have, tor many years, discussed (he prodigal waste of first-grade coal entailed by the present, method of working thick seams. Some estimates fix the rate of loss nt 75 per cent.
The present experiments are. being conducted by Hie technical advisory committee established by the New South Wales State Government, which is blaring the cost.
