Local Body Enrolments, Nominations

With the supplementary roll for the Whangarei Borough elections closing at 5 p.m. tomorrow, many applications for enrolment have been received. Since the roll was opened approximately 2000 people have enrolled and il is estimated that a further 500 have to make application under the compulsory clause of the recently passed Local Elections Bill. To accommodate late applicants the borough offices will remain open tomorrow until 5 p.m. The supplementary roll will be the largest in the history of Whangarei borough and will be approximately onethird the size of the main roll, which comprises 6000 names. Few Maoris have enrolled since the Bill came into operation, but a feature has been the enrolment of many naturalised British subjects. Borough Candidates

Nominations for Mayor, nine councillors. three hospital board representatives and two harbour board representatives close on May 15 at noon. Although two candidates for the mayorality. the sitting Mayor (Mr. W. Jones) and Mr. J. G. Draper, a member of the council, have signified their intention of standing neither has nominated so far.

Five candidates for the council have been received to date and are as follow: —Jian Charles McKenzie Carr, Richard John Northland Crosby (sitting member), James Ernest Henderson (sitting member). Christopher Parkes, George William Wilding. One nomination for the hospital board, that of Mr. Henderson, has been received but so far no candidates have offered for the harbour board.

Large Enrolment in County Nearly 1200 additional names under the new franchise conditions resulting from the Local Elections Bill have been enrolled for the Whangarei County elections. The roll has now closed and in one riding. Maungakaramea, which includes Portland, new voters outnumber ratepayers while in two other ridings the numbers of new voters and ratepayers are approximately the same. Few Maoris arc anion gtiie new enrolments. Details of residential enrolments and of the number of ratepayers, some of whom, uf course, have more than one vote by reason of the value of their holdings, are as follows: —

Nominations for county elections close on May 15 but nominations received to date are not available. One member is required for each of the 10 ridings while three county representatives on the harbour board, six on the hospital board and four on the North Auckland Electric-power Board also have to be elected.
