Reject Moscow Paper’s Demand That 1.L.0. Scrapped As ‘Bankrupt’
NEW YORK. April 20. The United States, through the Secretary for Labour (Miss Flotence Perkins) has bluntly rejected Moscow “Izvestia's” demands that the 1.L.0. be scrapped as a bankrupt appendage to the League of Nations and a new organisation established as an instrument for the United Nations, says the Philadelphia correspondent of the “Herald-Tribune.’ : Addressing 1.L.0. delegates. Miss Perkins declared: “Izvestia” is mistaken if it believes that the 1.L.0. is bankrupt. It decidedly is not bankrupt as is shown by the vigour and realistic character of the proposals before the conference.” The British Workers’ delegate (Mr John Hallsworth). said that the subject of making the 1.L.0. an instrument of the United Nations would be discussed at Philadelphia. He added that previously there had been a question of whether anyone from Russia could be considered an employers’ delegate but now managers of Soviet enterprises could be regarded as employers. The Mexican Labour delegate (Toledano) backed the Soviet proposal and said that the 1.L.0. and League grew from the World War, so a revised organisation of the United Nations should grow from the current war.
