Americans Progress At Anzio Beachhead
(Rec. 22.45 p.m.) LONDON, April 25. American troops improved their positions on Anzio beachhead yesterday for the second time in four days by capturing two features on the western rim of the bulge in the central perimeter, says Reuter’s correspondent at Allied headquarters. Italy. Another force occupied some woods two miles south of' Cisterna and enemy positions along the road extending southwards on bulges on the eastern rim. Normal exchanges of heavy gunfire occurred inside shattered Cassino. Dozens of small-scale patrol actions were fought out along 100 miles of the trans-Apen-nine front. Prisoners taken in the beachhead area recently were from a German infantry division which has been on this front since early in February. One prisoner quoted General Greiner as saying: ‘‘We will not evacuate until what are left can get away in one lorry." There is a marked falling off in enemy activity along the upper Garigliano. Italian Pilots Aid Units of the Italian Air Force are now fighting on the side of the Allies, reports “The Times" correspondent in Southern Italy. They have been posted to the eastern coast of Italy and engaged in operations across the Adriatic with Italian aircraft salvaged from Africa and Sicily and rebuilt by Italian engineers. Planes now total hundreds. Italians go on missions in the Balkans to harry German supplylines among the Dalmatian islands. The Italians continually ask British liaison officers if there is no chance of getting new machines. It would be a pity if their hopes are not realised.
