Germans Lose U-Boat For Every Ship Sunk

WASHINGTON, April 25.

The Germans are now losing a ratio of more than one U-boat for every merchant vessel they sink, said Admiral Francis A. Low, Chief of Staff of the United States 10th Fleet.

He added: “We are now in a better position regarding the German U-boat menace than at any time since the outbreak. U-boats are sinking considerably less than half of 1 per cent, of the ships being convoyed across the Atlantic." Admiral Low said it was believed to take the Germans two or three times as long to build a submarine as that vessel may, on an average, expect to endure on combat patrols. During 1948 and 1944 the Allies built more than 100 carriers of all types, and over COO destroyers aim escorts.
